Spring is here! How do we know? Ask the cherry blossoms in Roosevelt Island! In Japan, we rely on the cherry blossom front (sakura zensen) tracking the blossoming time of cherry trees throughout the country as an official measure of spring arrival. We celebrate this wonderful change in season with "Ohanami", literally translated as "flower-gazing". Actually, we do more than gaze; we eat, drink, sing and sometimes dance on the picnic blankets under the cherry blossom trees and have a blast!
Turns out you don't have to travel all the way to Japan to join the festivity!
The Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) will be hosting their First Annual Cherry Blossom Festival which will take place Saturday, April 30, from 1-3 p.m. Participating with RIRA, will be Roosevelt Island Operating Association (RIOC) and the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association Gallery (RIVAA).
